Bringing Fashion and Food Together

Canella Hostal
My two favourite things are being brought together in one night in the Tribeca Night Market that will feature ESMOD Dubai.

For those of you already au-fait with the night market, the market already has a big fashion and art element, but the inclusion of Esmod Dubai, will take this to a different level.  To be held on Wednesday 10th February, Tribeca Kitchen & Bar will be hosting the first ‘Tribeca Night Market’ of 2016, with ESMOD Dubai showcasing exciting and innovative collections of trendy designs and prints from young and upcoming designers.  Some of the designers featured include Faten Fashion, Kourosh Fashion Design and Canella Hostal Couture amongst others.

ESMOD Dubai supports fashion students after graduation through their Fashion Incubator Program. The incubator was established in line with ESMOD’s corporate social responsibility agenda to provide a unique and highly visible talent incubator to showcase emerging GCC designer brands and their collections.

Dubai to make New Years Eve go Bang!

Once again, Dubai will ring in the New Year with a bang - by having their domino effect firework display play out across the city
The Burj Khalifa at NY, from Therese's Paradise

Already known for its breath-taking firework displays and for being a go-to destination for New Years Eve, Dubai is set to raise the bar this New Year with a stunning 24 minute showpiece that will seamlessly flow from the iconic Burj Khalifa Downtown at midnight on a 23km journey along the city’s coastline to culminate in an awe-inspiring finale at THE BEACH by Meraas, opposite Jumeriah Beach Residence (JBR).

Six months in the planning and having taken two months to set up, the combined multimedia and fireworks extravaganza will see close to 9 tonnes of fireworks fired from over 685 positions by more than 100 specialist technicians as it continuously weaves its way from Downtown through the Business Bay Canal, along the Jumeirah coastline leading to the signature Burj Al Arab before climaxing in a six minute and 20 second crescendo at THE BEACH.

The domino effect show means Dubai residents and visitors will be able to watch the show from multiple vantage points on the night, helping in reducing traffic flows around Downtown and opening up the spectacle to people across the city. Specialist screens will also broadcast the event live at Kite Beach, Al Sufouh Beach and JBR.

Timings for the show:
12:00-12:07 Burj Khalifa and Downtown
12:07-12:09 Fireworks cascade along Jumeriah to reach Burj Al Arab
12:09-12:15 Burj Al Arab display
12:15-12:16 fireworks cascade down to The BEACH, opposite JBR
12:16-12:23 finale at The BEACH, opposite JBR

The full route with timings can be found at the Visit Dubai YouTube Channel here.

BURJ KHALIFA, DOWNTOWN DUBAI
Commencing from Downtown Dubai, Burj Khalifa will kick off the New Year countdown before lighting up the sky to welcome 2016 with an extraordinary symphony of fireworks, light beams and LED displays, including the largest LED screen in the world. The world’s highest fireworks on the 828m Burj Khalifa will feature a magical eight-act display that presents the futuristic vision of Dubai. Spectators can also watch the UAE flag unfurl from the pinnacle of Burj Khalifa followed by digital screens that celebrate the nation and the GCC countries to honour the spirit of solidarity and brotherhood.
Other notable Downtown Dubai events include colourful musical performances of The Dubai Fountain and towards midnight, a gentle ballet of light beams that will sweep through Downtown Dubai creating intricately designed patterns on the façade of The Dubai Mall.

BURJ AL ARAB
Fireworks at the Burj al Arab
From the cityscape to the marina, fireworks will illuminate the Jumeirah coastline which covers the popular Kite Beach, public beaches alongside Jumeirah Beach Road and finally, the Burj Al Arab just nine minutes after the stroke of midnight, captivating audiences across the city. The signature 5-star hotel guarantees guests the event of a lifetime set against a legendary backdrop, with a mesmerising display of epic proportions.
In addition to the fireworks, guests can also experience an evening of Moulin Rouge performances, filled with surprise acts throughout the evening as well as a reception in the world’s tallest atrium at Sahn Eddar. For those looking for the ultimate night out, guests can also attend the Gala Dinner set with entertainment, food and breath-taking views to help ring in the New Year.

THE BEACH
At 12:16m, catch the grand finale at THE BEACH. Guests can take part in the destination’s first ever music party, ‘Free Spirit’, headlined by internationally acclaimed DJ and producer, Pierre Ravan. In addition, THE BEACH has also organised exhilarating entertainment acts - LED performers, laser shows, fire breathers, aerial acts and more – to keep visitors to the urban destination completely riveted this New Year.
New Year’s Eve in Dubai has become one of the most sought after activities backed by a series of events and entertainment for all. From critically acclaimed musical guests to retailers providing exclusive access and views of the fireworks across the city – Dubai will not disappoint.
The event will be broadcasted on Dubai TV, international TV and online platform www.mydubainewyear.com, where viewers can choose from three different viewing cameras for a total perspective of the event.  For more information about New Years Eve 2016 including visitor parking and transportation information, visit @VisitDubai, @MyDubai, @BurjKhalifa, @BurjAlArab and @TheBeachDubai or follow the hashtags #BeThere #WatchLive #MyDubaiNewYear".

Jason Derulo headlines Dubai Music Week 2015

DMW 2015 confirms that Jason Derulo will kick off the first night of festival.

Dubai Music Week (DMW) 2015 has announced that award-winning singer, songwriter and dancer Jason Derulo will take to the stage of its opening night on Wednesday, September 23rd. Ellie Goulding has also been recently confirmed to perform on Thursday, September 24th and Thirty Seconds to Mars on Friday, September 25th.

With over 50 million singles sold worldwide, two billion views on YouTube and one billion plays on Spotify, fans could be forgiven for thinking that Derulo has been a long-time fixture of the music industry. Yet after only six years since the hit debut single “Whatcha Say”, Jason Derulo has taken the worldwide music industry by storm.

Early in his career, Derulo sealed a reputation as a talented wordsmith; showcased by his extensive songwriting for artists like P. Diddy, Sean Kingston and Lil Wayne. This skill was later cemented in 2011, when Derulo was honoured as 'Songwriter of the Year' at the BMI Pop Awards. Derulo's status as a true industry powerhouse can also be found in his commanding on-stage presence, which often sees the star engaging in incredible feats of dance. This has culminated in extensive world tours and sold out shows.

Showing no signs of slowing down, Derulo's fourth and latest studio album “Everything is 4” merges the pop, dance and urban sensibilities which have seen him recognised as a truly genre defying artist. The album includes the global hit “Want To Want Me”, which quickly became the most added track in the history of Top 40 Radio, shattering the previous record held by Justin Timberlake. Dubai audiences can look forward to an exciting and energetic live performance, punctuated by hit singles like “Whatcha Say”, “In My Head” and “Ridin’ Solo”. Follow Jason Derulo on @jasonderulo, #jasonderulo for all his latest updates.

DMW 2015, launched in partnership with Live Nation Middle East and Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), and supported by Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), is the premier international music festival in the Middle East and is an official event under this year’s Eid in Dubai. It features four main segments including concerts with an award-winning line-up of A-list performers, celebrity speaker sessions, master classes and an interactive entertainment village. The event at DWTC is expected to attract local and international music fans on its four nights from Wednesday, September 23rd through Saturday, September 26th.

The festival, which provides a platform for music fans to interact with local and international celebrities and musicians, will announce its final act for the Arabic night, celebrity speaker sessions and master classes soon. Tickets for all concerts are priced at 295 AED for general admission, fan pit access at 395 AED, and 550 AED for VIP admission. Please visit Dubai Music Week or ticketmaster to buy tickets now.

Madagascar Live

This weekend, Ian and I had the pleasure of taking our very excited two year old to see Madagascar.  All the kids were loving it,  dancing in the aisles, clapping and having a great time, whilst Alex, Gloria, Julien and Melman were rocking it on the stage.

I had read reviews where it said the show was nearly identical to the film, and on that I beg to differ.  There were differences, especially with the music.  I know this as we were watching the animation (for the 1000 time) immediately before we left for the World trade Centre, so my DD was shouting the entire journey, "I like to move it, move it." and again as we waited for the auditorium to fill.  That was the only dissapointment.  That song, made infamous in the movie with Julien (a.k.a. Sacha Baron Cohen) singing about how he likes to dance, was cut to the first few cords.  My DD and none of the other kids noticed though, and that is all that matters.

Here are just a few shots of the show.

Foodie Fantasy - Gaucho’s DIFC

Last Monday, Ian and I had dinner at Gaucho’s, which I was really looking forward to – You just can’t be perfectly cooked Argentinian steak!

Already a Gaucho officiando, as it has been a regular haunt of mine for years in London, I was very much looking forward to seeing if there would be any difference.  Located in the heart of DIFC in Gate Village, this stunning restaurant is accessed either from Gate Village or else directly from the car park – For those wanting a discrete entrance, or just valet parking.

The Gaucho brand is very evident throughout the venue.  The cowhide seats, black décor and tables (which you expect from the brand), adds a sense of luxury which you find in all the restaurants.

Bife de Cuadril
The staff, as you would expect were excellent throughout the night.  With a warm welcome, our waitress for the evening Jacelyn was lovely and friendly.  She knew the menu inside out, and was able to tell us what wines we should consider to go with each dish that was selected, which is vitally important for vino novices like ourselves who tend to stick to mocktails or cocktails.

Both Ian and myself started with the asparagus soup with truffle oil.  I had never had this in any Gaucho’s and loved it.  The creamy soup was perfectly seasoned and buttery.  It made me question why I had never made it myself (it is now on the list for my next dinner party), and was a great intro into what the rest of the dinner would bring for us.

Grilled Asparagus
Being pregnant, the starter that I would have loved were the Scallops (Ian made sure to order these and very much enjoyed them), but I was happy when my starter – King Prawn Chorizo and Orange – arrived.  Ian had food envy when he caught sight of the huge juicy butterflied prawns had been lightly grilled and were delivered, with fresh pea shoots making the dish look beautiful, to our table.  The slightly sweet orange coulis, with just hint of chilli, perfectly complemented the meat of the prawns.  Divine!

As a main course, I have to admit that I was boring; I overlooked the large menu and favourites of mine such as the Risotto, to focus purely on the steak.  I mean, when in Rome and all that… but I did question this choice.  Under ordinary circumstances I would have my steak blue, I like to taste the meat and the more juices that flow from the steak, the better.  Unfortunately, I am not allowed this at the moment.  As I am pregnant, my steak has to be well done.  I couldn’t go that far though and asked for a medium to well-done Bife de Cuadril (fillet steak), with mashed potato and truffle.  Ian’s order mirrored my own.  We both shared the asparagus and quails eggs with Parmesan shavings.  Both steaks were cooked to perfection and it was great to have the truffle oil not over power the mashed potato as I have found it to in other restaurants.

Vanilla Pannecotta
By this point, I was ashamed to say I was full.  Ian ordered the deconstructed Vanilla Pannecotta and declared it to be the best desert in Dubai.  The wonderful creaminess was perfectly sweetened with the vanilla and it was light too, meaning he didn’t feel the bloat that he would usually experience by having desert with such a large dinner.

It really was a great dinner.  All in all, I can’t wait to return once bump is born so that I can have the steak exactly as I love it.
